CBD (Cannabidiol) has been covered recently in the media, and you might have seen it touted as an add-in supplement to your morning coffee or post-workout smoothie.
What is CBD? And why are CBD gummies and other CBD-infused products suddenly so popular?
CANNABIDIOL - OTHER NAME(S): 3-Methyl-6-prop-1-en-2-ylcyclohex-2-en-5-pentylbenzene-1, 3-diol
CBD is a chemical compound obtained from the Cannabis sativa (aka marijuana) plant.
Over 80 chemical compounds - known as cannabinoids - have been identified within the marijuana plant.
While THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main active component, CBD makes up about forty percent of marijuana extracts and has been the subject of various studies for its many different uses.
According to the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration), since CBD is still under research as a new type of drug, products containing CBD are not referred to as dietary supplements. However, there are still a few products on the market labeled as nutritional supplements which contain CBD. The amount of CBD inside such products isn’t always accurately stated on the label.
People ingest CBD orally for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, a muscle disorder called dystonia, diabetes, seizures, Parkinson's disease, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, graft-versus-host-disease, and anxiety.
Some people also inhale CBD vapors to help them quit smoking.
CBD is not intoxicating and doesn’t induce any noticeable mind-altering effects associated with THC. However, products sold as CBD oil might contain small amounts of THC.
It is a common belief that CBD can affect our health and well-being by effectively attaching to receptors in our body’s ECS (endocannabinoid) system—a complex biological system responsible for maintaining specific aspects of human health.
Emerging research reports show that the CBD compound may be able to regulate some vital functions like memory, mood, and sleep, and metabolic processes like the balance of energy.
The main component of CBD oil is the CBD compound (and sometimes a few other active compounds) inside a carrier oil.
There is a wide variety of CBD oils available today, including tinctures, soft-gel capsules, and sprays. Some types of CBD oil, in the form of salves and creams, can be applied directly to the skin surface.
Apart from oil, we also have CBD Oil for anxiety (pain) (insomnia), etc., in the market.
Uses & Effectiveness Of CBD.
CBD is LIKELY to be useful for Epilepsy. CBD –infused products have been shown to minimize seizures and various conditions associated with seizures in children and adults.
CBD has also been demonstrated to minimize seizures in patients with febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES), Sturge-Weber syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex. But it has not been approved for treatment of these other kinds of seizures.
CBD is POSSIBLY useful for treating Multiple sclerosis (MS). CBD-infused products have been helpful treatment options for improving urination frequency, muscle-tightness, and pain, in people living with MS. However, there is inconsistent proof of the effectiveness of CBD in managing symptoms of multiple sclerosis when utilized alone.
There is insufficient Evidence for; Diabetes, Crohn's disease, and Bipolar disorder, Huntington's disease and Insomnia. More evidence is required to rate CBD’s effectiveness in treating these conditions.
Side Effects And Safety.
Organic cannabidiol gummies are quite safe when ingested orally. Daily CBD doses of 300 mg can be consumed safely for six months. A higher dose of between 1200-1500 mg every day can be consumed safely for one month.
Special Precautions And Warnings
Children; CBD gummies are SAFE when taken orally every day. Typical doses used for kids are 10 mg/kg every day, and a higher dose of 15-20 mg/kg may be given every day to some children. However, a higher dose is more likely to have side effects. CBD-infused products have received approval for use in kids that are two years of age and above.
Pregnancy And Breast-Feeding;
There isn’t enough reliable evidence to support the safety of using CBD products if you are either pregnant or breastfeeding. It is better to stay safe and avoid use.
Some research has indicated that using CBD excessively can trigger a few side effects, including;
- Changes in appetite
- Changes in mood
- Dry mouth
The Bottom Line On CBD.
Some manufacturers of CBD have come under intense government scrutiny for making wild, indefensible claims, that CBD is an effective cure-all treatment for cancer, which it isn’t.
More research is needed, but CBD gummies for anxiety (pain) (insomnia), etc. may be a valid option for managing chronic depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
